Belfast’s leading intercultural arts organisation ArtsEkta officially launched its new Kits of Kindness project this week (13th January) at Fane Street Primary School as part of a special One World Day celebration, attended by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, local pupils, and community leaders.

Kits of Kindness is a bold, creative initiative designed to empower young people across Belfast to celebrate diversity, challenge racism, and build stronger, more connected communities in the wake of last year’s public disorder.

Funded through the Belfast City Council Good Relations Unit, the kits are a youth-focused, arts-led response to the rise in hate-related behaviours across the city in recent times. Over 150 kits will be distributed through schools across the city, with a focus on areas most affected by racial tension and division.

Designed with a vibrant street-art style, the kits reflect the voices, humour and hopes of Belfast’s Gen Alpha generation.

Each kit includes:

  • A welcome message inviting young people to reflect, create, and express their own stories of inclusion
  • Powerful stickers, artwork, and creative materials designed by a Belfast-based illustrator Kerrie Hanna, featuring youth-informed messaging and bold visuals
  • Belonging to Belfast publication to help understand diversity in the local context with games, recipes, arts & crafts and more.
  • A customisable postcard and bookmark exploring identity, resilience and belonging
  • Curated items such as affirmation cards, at home craft activities and sensory-friendly materials

“Young people told us they didn’t just want to talk about racism — they wanted to do something about it. These kits give them creative tools to speak up, develop understanding and show pride in who they are, and stand up for others,” said Nisha Tandon, Founder & CEO of ArtsEkta.

“They’re a small box with a big message: you belong here.”

The project builds on ArtsEkta’s award-winning One World Day schools programme and the annual Belfast Mela, aiming to spark intercultural dialogue and solidarity at a grassroots level.

At the event, pupils took part in a cultural celebration, explored their kits, and were joined by the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Tracy Kelly.

“This is a fantastic initiative that reflects the very best of Belfast – creative, inclusive, and community-driven,” said the Lord Mayor of Belfast.

“It’s heartening to see young people leading the way in building a city where everyone feels welcome. Projects like Kits of Kindness show how the arts can help us connect, heal, and grow together and I am delighted that we could help fund this incredible project.”

Kits of Kindness will continue to be distributed from January 2026.
