Earth Child

Earth Child was a spectacular large-scale outdoor theatre production co-created by ArtsEkta and Fidget Feet Aerial Dance to celebrate 20 years of Belfast Mela.

Staged at Belfast’s iconic Titanic Slipways on 23 August 2026, Earth Child brought together aerial performance, original music, storytelling, global dance and drumming, fire, pyrotechnics and hundreds of professional and community performers in an unforgettable shared experience beneath the Belfast sky.

At the heart of the production was the story of a child searching for balance in a world unravelling. Guided by the elemental tribes of Earth, Fire, Water and Air, the Earth Child journeyed through ancient stories and traditions drawn from cultures across the world, discovering that no single element can exist in isolation and that harmony can only be restored when we recognise our connection to one another.

Written by Gráinne Holland and Jym Daly, with Gráinne also appearing as the Storyteller, the production transformed the Titanic Slipways into an immersive 360-degree stage. Aerial performers soared up to 35 metres above the Belfast skyline from two towering cranes, while processions, dancers, musicians, fire artists and community performers surrounded the audience at ground level.

Commissioned as a landmark celebration of Belfast Mela’s 20th anniversary, Earth Child embodied the values that have shaped the festival since its beginnings in 2006: cultural exchange, participation, creativity and the belief that shared experiences can bring people together.

Through a story of imbalance, belonging and ultimately hope, Earth Child offered a simple message for our times — we are all connected, and our differences are part of what makes the whole beautiful.

Earth Child was supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs through the Shared Island Civic Society Fund, and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation.
